"Some products deserve a second life". From now on, Nike is reinventing itself in your closet and wardrobe, not with new sneaker releases, but with pre-owned pairs! Last Tuesday, the Swoosh brand launched an online resale program for refurbished sneakers. Called Nike Refurbished, the program is an online extension of its initiative launched in 2021, previously only available in select stores such as Nike Factory Store, Nike Unite, and Nike Community Store.
With the rise of second-hand platforms like Vinted, eBay, and Leboncoin, the American giant is now offering its own platform that provides the opportunity to take back returns, exchange pairs with minor imperfections, and give a second life to all Nike sneakers, including the Jordan range.
Every Nike shoe that cannot be sold as brand new is eligible. For example, an Air Force 1 with slight imperfections or a Dunk Low that someone returns or exchanges after a recent purchase because it doesn't fit can be sent to the platform. All products are then inspected, evaluated, and refurbished by a team of specialists. First, the specialist team inspects items that cannot be sold as new. Then, each product is carefully cleaned and disinfected. Finally, the item's condition is assessed by the team, determining whether the pair is like new, slightly worn, or has some imperfections.
"More durability. Less waste"
This is the promise the sportswear brand announces with Nike Refurbished. "Nike's goal is a circular, zero-carbon, zero-waste future", the brand stated in a press release. "While Nike Refurbished shoes are available in select Nike stores, we are also testing by offering Nike Refurbished products online to extend the life of authentic Nike products at an affordable price".
Every pair of sneakers listed on the program will be classified into one of the following three categories:
- Like New, the pair is in perfect or near-perfect condition.
- Gently Worn for shoes in very good condition but showing slight signs of wear or cosmetic defects.
- With cosmetic defects such as stains, marks, discoloration, or faded colors.
Due to the nature of the supply, only selected sizes and colors in certain models will be available at any given time. That's why Nike encourages buyers to frequently check stock updates on the platform. A great initiative from the American giant and its Move To Zero mission.
Note that for now, the platform is only available in the United States, but it should be arriving in Europe soon.
