The iconic Swoosh brand celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. On this occasion, Nike intends to make a mark and introduces many unprecedented events planned from May 16 to 20, to bring together its Members from around the world.
To not miss any of these festive events, it’s over here!
Nike: the creation of a symbolic brand
“50 years of athletes serving athletes. 50 years of becoming stronger, faster, and more dynamic. 50 years of making mistakes and improving because of them.
And if we learned anything from the past, it’s that we are in an amazing future.”
Launched in 1964, the company initially appeared under a different name than we know today. Indeed, it was called Blue Ribbon Sports and served as an American distributor of running shoes made by the Japanese company Onitsuka Tiger.
It was in 1971 that Philip Knight and Bill Bowerman renamed Blue Ribbon Sport to Nike, in reference to the Greek goddess “Niké”, the deity of victory. With perfect product knowledge and entrepreneurial vision, the co-founders quickly developed the company and stopped reselling equipment from other brands. By 1972, it underwent a real change with the creation of the legendary Nike Cortez, one of the most important models in the history of running and sneaker culture. Indissociable from the brand's history, it was designed by co-founder Bill Bowerman, a former track coach at the University of Oregon, to meet the needs of long-distance runners and displayed for the first time, the timeless swoosh.

The enthusiasm around this first Nike shoe is explained by a flexible, perfectly gripping “waffle” sole and a rubber midsole, designed to absorb shocks. Comfortable and designed for athletes, the Nike Cortez was quickly adopted by runners and transitioned from sports shoes to street shoes, launching the first sportswear models.
From the Cortez to the Nike Air Force 1, through the brilliant “Air” technology and the slogan “Just Do It”, the sportswear brand has proven to be innovative and has brilliantly traversed the ages over time. Timeless, the brand has now inscribed numerous silhouettes into sneaker culture and has risen to the rank of leader.
