In 1997, Nike launched the Nike Air Zoom Spiridon, without imagining the impact this pair would have on sneaker culture. Originally designed for running, the shoe was adopted by everyone, transforming a technical model into an icon. Nearly three decades later, this iconic silhouette makes its grand comeback in 2024, marking a new era for the Swoosh.
From the very beginning, the ambition behind the creation of the Spiridon was simple: to design a shoe capable of helping athletes achieve exceptional performance. While the pair traces its origins to the history of sport, more specifically running, its name pays tribute to Spyridon Louis, the Greek runner who became a legend by winning the first marathon at the modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. An emblematic victory that left such an impression that the sportswear brand made his first name a symbol.
In this spirit, the first versions featured a gold Swoosh, as a nod to the gold medals that runners hoped to win at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. With its minimalist design and colorway (white and red), the Nike Air Zoom Spiridon embodies the pursuit of victory and seems ready to return to the starting line.
The past serving the present
Futuristic appearance. Reflective elements. No doubt about it, this is indeed the Nike Air Zoom Spiridon. True to the original design, this reissue highlights a silhouette with carefully selected materials: the silver mesh upper pairs with black metallic mesh at the mudguard. The metallic red Swoosh on the side panels and the embroidered Swoosh on the tongue bring a distinctive and recognizable touch.
On the technology side, Zoom Air provides a reactive and lightweight cushioning, while the rubber outsole, with its detailed traction patterns, ensures impeccable grip on all surfaces. More than just a shoe, the Nike Air Zoom Spiridon is a vibrant tribute to an era, a silhouette, and a running legend. A model that, in 1997, represented innovation and performance, and that, in 2024, continues to symbolize those very same values.
New collaborations to revive the model
To amplify the Spiridon's return, Nike is banking on prestigious collaborations. Headlining: Travis Scott. La Flame has joined the exclusive club of collaborators who have had the chance to rework the 90s classic. Initially announced under the name Shark-A-Don, it is ultimately under the Nike Zoom Field name that the collaboration between the two partners has expanded. To relaunch the model, La Flame opted for a suede and leather construction. On the colorway side, the upper features an immaculate design while brown accents appear on the Swoosh and various elements, such as the CACTUS logo hidden beneath the mesh of the locking strap.

While we knew Travis Scott's love for the Swoosh brand's iconic models, no one expected to see a reissue of the Nike Air Zoom Spiridon by Hiroshi Fujiwara. The streetwear pioneer teased (in turn) the box of his upcoming collaboration with the Swoosh, confirming the first glimpse of a Fragment x Nike Air Zoom Spiridon SP. At first glance, the undisputed master of minimalism and Fragment founder has revealed a design faithful to the key characteristics of the original model, enhanced by a subtle colorway with Fragment's signature touch.

Finally, Undefeated recently unveiled its own interpretation of the 1997 design. The Los Angeles-based label took advantage of the latest edition of ComplexCon and a public event to give a preview of its upcoming collaboration with the Swoosh. At first glance, its version blends retro elements with a navy blue palette, adding a fresh touch to the iconic model. And while twelve lucky individuals already had the chance to walk away with the Undefeated x Nike Air Zoom Spiridon, patience will be required as no date has been confirmed yet.
