What is the story behind Nike sneakers?

At the time of its creation, Nike had not yet taken on that name: the company was then called Blue Ribbon Sports. Founded in 1964 by Bill Bowerman (track coach) and his former student Phil Knight, the company operated as an American distributor of running shoes made by the Japanese company Onitsuka Tiger (also known as Asics). With the success of their retail outlets, Knight and Bowerman decided to develop and manufacture their own shoes: their company officially changed its name to become the Nike brand in 1971. Going public later in 1980, it is now one of the best-selling brands in the world. It has retail outlets and distributors in over 170 countries. The brand has gone through many eras, bringing its share of iconic models and innovations, such as the Zoom sole and ISPA technologies. Today, beyond sneakers, the Swoosh brand offers a wide range of products, whether clothing collections, accessories, or technical sports items.

Where does the name Nike come from?

Why is Nike called Nike? It is a word derived from the ancient Greek goddess of victory. Originally, co-founder Knight wanted to name his brand "Dimension Six." Other proposals were made, including "Peregrine" or “Bengal” in line with Puma. But none of these ideas really stood out. The final idea came from the factory manager on the East Coast, Johnson: after analyzing the names of major brands like Kleenex and Xerox, he realized that many contained only 3 syllables and at least one letter or exotic sound with a Z, an X, or a K. The next morning, Johnson woke up with the name "Nike." But despite reaching some sort of consensus among the existing staff, Knight was not a fan of the name. Listening to his team, he ultimately settled on this one, and the rest is history.

Who designed the Nike logo?

Like adidas or Puma, the logo is a key element that defines the brand and allows it to be recognized at a glance. The now-famous Nike logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student at Portland State University. After sketching a few ideas, she decided to present one to the founders of Nike: it was the now-iconic "Swoosh". Like the name, Knight was not necessarily convinced at first, but he let the idea grow on him. The student was paid $35 for the creation of the Nike logo, and then was hired for a few years at the company. A little anecdote: despite her low pay on the day, Carolyn Davidson received a gold Swoosh ring with a diamond embedded during a lunch in her honor, 12 years later. The company also offered her a certificate and an undisclosed amount of Nike stock, in recognition of her work on the Swoosh logo.

Where does the Nike slogan come from?

The captivating story of Nike would not be complete without mentioning the significant affair related to its iconic slogan. Indeed, it is not just a catchy word, but an expression that has redefined the brand's identity. The flagship product of Nike found its voice in this slogan, which embodies much more than a simple statement. This iconic slogan, "Just Do It", emerged from a bold contract between the brand and the creative advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy in the 80s. Its value far exceeds the realm of marketing: it represents a mindset, an invitation to action and self-fulfillment. "Just Do It" is not just an advertising message; it has become a universal mantra, synonymous with determination, overcoming oneself, and achievement. Its origin perfectly illustrates the very essence of Nike's boldness in pushing boundaries and encouraging everyone to surpass themselves.

What was the first Nike sneaker?

One of the first Nike shoes was the so-called "Moon Shoes" from 1972. This is a very rare pair that was designed and handmade for athletes during the 1972 Olympic trials in Munich. Only 12 pairs are said to have been made, and the pair sold at auction has never been worn. Bill Bowerman reportedly used his wife's Belgian waffle iron as a mold to create the "waffled" rubber soles of the shoes. He believed he could produce a revolutionary new sole that would have enough grip while remaining very light.

Nike Air Force 1: launched in 1982 as a basketball shoe, the Air Force 1 quickly found its place in men's and women's wardrobes. The iconic Nike Air Force 1 White has made its way into most closets, positioning it as the most popular pair from the Swoosh brand.
Nike Air Max 1: a true revolution at the time of its release, it features a visible air cushion integrated into the sole.
Nike Air Max 97: its aesthetic is inspired by the shinkansen, the Japanese high-speed train.
Nike Cortez: a mix of leather for its upper and rubber for its sole, it quickly captivated the crowds. This model is now available in other materials such as textile or satin.
Air Jordan 1: before becoming a brand in its own right, the Air Jordan line started with the Jordan 1 at Nike.
Nike Dunk: released in 1985, it became essential in street style with its minimalist design and color variations. To continue evolving and innovating in favor of sustainable development, Nike has developed the Next Nature collection, which offers shoes made from recycled materials.
Nike Blazer: returning to the roots of basketball, this pair has clean and vintage lines.
