Some silhouettes disappear after a single release, then haunt search bars for years. The Nike Air Max 1/97 is one of them.
Born in 2018 from Sean Wotherspoon's winning Vote Forward design, the hybrid grafted the Air Max 97 upper onto the Air Max 1 sole. Its multicolored corduroy build turned the original release into an instant grail, and Nike never revisited it. Seven years on, the mold is back, just not where anyone expected.
Nike Air Max 1/97 Doernbecher Freestyle 2027. The model returns as part of Nike's Doernbecher Freestyle charity collection rather than a new Wotherspoon chapter. The colorway is still under wraps: it will be designed by one of six young patients from OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital behind the 2027 class.
Launched in 2004, the Doernbecher program pairs hospitalized kids with Nike designers each year to build one-of-one pairs whose sales fund the hospital. The Air Max 1/97 sits alongside five other models: an Air Jordan 11 Low IE, an Air Force 1 Mid, an ACG Rufus, a Structure Plus and one silhouette still kept quiet.
That leaves the real question this return opens up: after nearly a decade away, could the Air Max 1/97 come back beyond the charity project? Nothing is confirmed for now. Until then, the Doernbecher Freestyle 2027 collection is expected in spring 2027, likely as early as January, priced around $170 for the Air Max 1/97 in the US.
