So what does Nike TN actually mean?
Several nicknames have stuck with the Nike Air Max Plus: the Nike TN, the Tuned, or even the Shark for its aggressive look. You have certainly wondered: what does the famous "Tn" stand for? Nike's Tuned Air technology is designed to distribute pressurized air across the multiple visible air bubbles, providing better cushioning, particularly for athletic performance. Today, the shoe originally designed for physical activity can be found on the feet of thousands of people, closely tied to the rap and streetwear scene. Rappers have adopted it, even giving it shout-outs in their lyrics or featuring it in their music videos. Even though the "Lacoste TN" image still resonates today, the Shark is no longer just a pair seen in the housing projects. It proudly appears on the feet of men and women of all styles and generations.
A bit of history
It is Sean McDowell who is behind the success of this shoe, born in 1998 and celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The Swoosh brand challenged him to create a new running sneaker for a project called "Sky Air" in partnership with retailer Foot Locker. A challenge brilliantly met, given the current success of the Nike Air Max Plus!
He drew his inspiration from the landscapes of Florida, blending sun, beaches, palm trees, and whales, giving birth to the three OG models: the Hyper Blue, the Orange Tiger, and the Grey Shark. They immediately stood out with their distinctive silhouette featuring wavy lines, but especially thanks to the gradient that adorns their respective uppers.
In 2018, for the model's 20th anniversary, the Beaverton-based firm decided to treat its community by launching a pack of three pairs featuring the OG colorways from 1998. It is also possible that the "Hyper Blue" will make its grand return in 2024, stay tuned!
Collaborations and special editions
As with most sneakers from the Swoosh brand, special editions and collaborations have emerged on the Nike Air Max Plus. We can think back to the Supreme x Nike Tn pack released in 2020, the Nike Air Max Plus "Saint-Denis" that appeared last year, or the Nike TN in partnership with Patta or A-Cold-Wall* planned for the coming months!
