Nike Shox Characteristics
The Origin of This Bold Design
After producing shoes equipped with Air Sole units, Nike once again turned to Bruce Kilgore, the father of the Air Force 1, to create a revolutionary runner. It took nearly a decade for the Nike Shox technology with its famous columns providing unique cushioning to come to life. It was finally in 2000 that the first Nike Shox with four columns located solely on the heel was commercialized. The Nike Shox R4 was followed three years later by the Nike Shox TL, which features columns running along the entire sole. Also designed by Bruce Kilgore, another well-known designer at the Swoosh, the creator of the Air Max 95, contributed his expertise to the shoe: Sergio Lozano. You can spot a few elements on the Nike Shox TL reminiscent of the Air Max 95 created by Lozano ten years earlier.
Nike Shox Technology
While today this technology may seem rather "simple," when it was being developed in the '90s, it was a real revolution for a pair of running shoes. Nike Shox technology works like springs, which are actually foam compartments that compress when pressure is applied, whether you're walking or exercising. When the compartments decompress, energy is redistributed, providing excellent cushioning. It was in pursuit of even more advanced cushioning that the Nike Shox TL was born, featuring the technology along the entire length of the sole.
Notable Nike Shox Collaborations
You know the Swoosh's passion for collaborations with artists, designers and other brands that bring fresh energy to the fashion world and streetwear in particular.
CDG x Nike Shox TL
It was in 2019 that the Nike Shox made its powerful comeback thanks to the famous collaboration with Japanese brand Comme Des Garcons, which didn't go unnoticed during SS19 Fashion Week. Not one but two bling-bling silhouettes surfaced, with a white version on one side and a black one on the other, both featuring prominent brandings in the form of removable jewelry pieces.
Skepta x Nike Shox TL
The London rapper and the American sportswear brand have worked together on multiple occasions; however, 2019 marks their first partnership centered around the Nike Shox TL. The pair conveys a sense of power with its black upper and red springs, representing his origins and his feelings when he was named a chief in Ogun, the Nigerian state his parents are from.
Neymar x Nike Shox R4
Famous Brazilian footballer Neymar also collaborated with Nike to create special editions of the Nike Shox R4 in 2019. The sneakers were available in a variety of colors and featured Neymar's "NJR" logo.
Martine Rose x Nike Shox MR4
Boldness and surprise were the order of the day with the release of this pack of pairs designed by Martine Rose, a London-based designer. The pairs represent the fusion of sport and fashion with their elegant yet spring-loaded shape. They were created this year for the UEFA Women's Euro, reflected through their colorways inspired by football goalkeeper jerseys.
